Gunns' writ rejected

The third writ by giant woodchip company Gunns Ltd, against the
so-called "Gunns 20" defendants, was rejected by Justice Bongiorno in
the Victorian Supreme Court in Melbourne this morning.

"This is a huge vicory for those of us fighting against Gunns'
destruction of Tasmania's ancient forests and wildlife," Greens Leader
Bob Brown said outside the court today.

"But the threat of further litigation by Gunns has not been lifted. What
has been established is that Gunns' writ, including claims of a
conspiracy, is burdensome, unfair and unjust on the forest defenders.
The court may have taken a chainsaw to Gunns' writ, but it has not
stopped Gunns' chainsaws from continuing to wreck the heirloom forests
and wildlife of Tasmania. Our campaigns will continue," Senator Brown
said.

Senator Brown will be in San Francisco on the 19th of October, the last
day in which Gunns can lay new charges in the court. He is accepting an
award from the Rainforest Action Network and will address 500 people on
the logging of Tasmania's old-growth forests.
