*Government gambles community health with NSBT*
The Queensland Greens say the government is endangering the community’s
health by ignoring air quality issues with the North South Bypass Tunnel
(NSBT).
“The government’s lead bureaucrat, Co-ordinator General Ross Rolfe,
recently gave the green light for some changes to the NSBT. While he
raised the height of the ventilation outlets on either end of the
tunnel, he didn’t require the stacks or the air within the tunnel to be
filtered,” said environmental lawyer and Queensland Greens Brisbane
Central candidate Larissa Waters.
A leading air quality expert, Professor Lydia Morowska of the Queensland
University of Technology, has recently compared emissions from
unfiltered tunnel stacks to ‘power stations’, and doctors warn of health
impacts.
“Lord Mayor Newman has also admitted the NSBT will increase congestion
in and around Brisbane, and for that privilege the Brisbane ratepayers
will be hit $730 million”.
“The NSBT will also be a nightmare for residents during construction,
not just for those people being kicked out of their homes. The new
construction rules mean trucks at Bowen Hills can work 24 hours a day,
and larger, fasting tunnel boring machines are likely to aggravate
residents with their noise and vibrations.
“The Greens would ensure that all transport decisions protect our and
our children’s health by maintaining air quality, and would build a
light rail system for Brisbane instead of constant road expansion – more
roads just mean more people use cars so it doesn’t fix the congestion
problem.” Ms Waters said.
