Prime Minister responsible for mental anguish of Nauruan detainees

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today asked the Prime Minister to heed the
plea of the Nauruan Foreign Minister and intervene to bring the two
detainees currently in Nauru to Australia.

"Only the Prime Minister can act to help these men on Nauru, because the
Department of Immigration is being overruled by ASIO," Senator Nettle
said.

"The Prime Minister should cut through the ASIO red tape and allow these
men to come to Australia to receive the medical attention they need.

"John Howard will be personally responsible if either man suffers
further tragedy having been reduced to desperate states.

"I have been in contact with both these men and remain deeply concerned
about their welfare.

"These men have still not been told by ASIO about the reasons for their
adverse assessments, nor have their lawyers or parliamentarians been
informed despite repeated requests.

"How many more tragedies are in store for those who flee from
persecution only to end up in Australia's Guantanamo Bay in Nauru?

"I will move an amendment to the Migration Act to end the Pacific
Solution for good."
