Pregnancy counselling guide will save women from unnecessary trauma

04.08.06

Greens Health Spokesperson, Senator Kerry Nettle, today launched The
Greens Guide to Pregnancy Counselling. This handy guide, to be
distributed to women's health centres around the country, will provide
women with the information they need to know which counselling services
are genuine all option services and which are not.

"The Greens are deeply concerned by the number of deceptive pregnancy
counselling services and, by producing this guide, have acted to provide
a much needed resource for pregnant women" Senator Nettle said.

"We put this guide together after being approached by several women
asking how they can tell which services will offer all option pregnancy
counselling and which will not assist with but actively discourage
abortions.

"My office has researched this guide by contacting services and reading
the literature they promote themselves through.

"Each year thousands of pregnant women contact pregnancy counselling
services expecting to get unbiased advice and instead find that they are
told misinformation about abortions and fed religious ideology.

"The recent Senate Committee into pregnancy is counselling services
heard horrific examples of such misinformation and malpractice
occurring.

"The Greens urge the government to make a requirement of receiving
government funds for pregnancy counselling that the service must offer
genuine all options pregnancy counselling."
