What we know and what we don't

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has argued that we are learning more about the government's intent through this week's leaks to media than through the budget itself.

"The budget was so obscure, with so little detail about the impact of
cuts on departments,  that we are learning more from the leaks now than from the actual budget" Dr Foskey said today.

"While ACT Government has every right to expect proper behaviour from its employees, Canberra people similarly expect full disclosure by the government."

"Wednesday's leak has given us a glimpse of the extraordinary cost cutting exercise required by this budget.  The government now needs to tell us what it is doing with that list, and how the social or environmental impacts will be assessed."  

 "Furthermore, this slash and burn exercise is being done on the basis of an inquiry - the Costello review - which has not been made public."

"That level of secrecy is where the problem started, not with the public servants who are now speaking out."

"It is no wonder that some people appear to be doing their best to expose the ACT Government's thinking to the cold light of day, whatever the consequence" Dr Foskey said.
