Summernats environmental approval welcomed

Greens MLA Dr Deb Foskey welcomes the recommendation of the Summernats 2005 review calling for amendments to the Environment Protection Act 1997 to enable greater enforcement and improvements to the environmental approval processes.

"The ACT Greens acknowledge that many Canberra people enjoy Summernats but a bottom line has to be that such events are subject to a rigorous environmental approvals process" Dr Foskey said today.

"We also question whether such events should take place so close to residential areas given the noise and potential health impacts. We would support the approval process including a health impact assessment."

"The community quite rightly also needs to know that noise and air quality standards are not being infringed and that there are mechanisms in place to enforce licence conditions."

"The Summernat recommendations are also in line with the recommendations of the Review of the Environment Protection Act 1997 and the Role of the Environment Protection Authority conducted last year."

"We are pleased to hear that the Summernat organisers have accepted the recommendations" Dr Foskey said.
