Ideologically-driven attacks on single mothers will hurt our kids the
most.
Cutting the income of single mothers who take on part-time work is a
short-sighted move according to Senator Rachel Siewert.
"Welfare to Work will undermine the next generation of Australians," she
said.
Senator Siewert, The Greens spokesperson on social services, was
responding to the release of figures by the National Centre for Economic
and Social Modelling indicating that single mothers working 15 hours a
week on minimum wages will be worse off by $86 a week under the Welfare
to Work scheme.
"Australia should be making the most of its strong economy to invest in
the future," said Senator Siewert.
"We should be trying to raise the standard of living of disadvantaged
kids to give them a chance to lead more productive and fulfilling lives,
not pushing them into poverty."
The Greens community campaign against the Welfare to Work package is
part of their vision for a more sustainable future.
"We should be supporting and encouraging single mothers to improve their
lot, for the good of their kids and the future of our nation," she said.
