Taiwan leaders should be welcome in Australia

Greens Senator Bob Brown says the Federal Government must allow the
Taiwanese leadership, including President Chen Shui-bian to visit
Australia.

"It is reasonable and sensible to allow the leaders of this nearby
democracy to visit Australia," Senator Brown said.

"To do otherwise would be an affront to Australia's own democratic
values.

"To allow the leaders of mainland China's communist police state to
visit Australia, as the Howard Government has done, and not those of the
Taiwan democracy, would be both illogical and unconscionable.

"The 23 million people of Taiwan, like all people on the planet, have a
right to self determination," Senator Brown said.
