ACT GREENS MLA DEB FOSKEY MEDIA RELEASE

Mon 8 Aug 2005

Burmese Embassy demonstration

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey is supporting a protest outside the Burmese Embassy in Arkana St Yarralumla at 1:00pm today, on the anniversary of the 8/8/88 uprising.

The protest is being held commemorate the August 1988 "People's Power" street demonstrations across Burma. On August 8 the nation-wide uprising was brutally gunned down by army troops, resulting in the death of thousands of unarmed demonstrators, including children. August will always be remembered as a month of bloodshed and crushed hopes; and a key moment in the ongoing struggle for democracy in Burma.

Two years later the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi won the popular election in a landslide. Of course it's well known that the ruling military regime has never permitted that democratically elected government to take its place.

" I am joining the protest outside the Embassy here in Canberra in order to highlight the violence and oppression of the military Burmese regime, and to support those brave Burmese people who continue to fight for democracy and human rights" Dr Foskey said today.
