MEDIA RELEASE 2 August 2005
Refshauge was always constrained by the ALP right wing machine
Deputy Premier Andrew Refshauge will be remembered for juggling his strong progressive attitudes with the constraints of the Australian Labor Party right wing machine, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said today.
"Dr Refshauge talked the talk of progressive politics, but his right wing cabinet colleagues made sure he couldn't walk the walk," Ms Rhiannon said.
"Whilst Dr Refshauge attitudes to politics were often commendable, he was continually hemmed in by the dominance of his own party's conservative elements.
"It is a sad fact that under Dr Refshauge's watch, the quality of the State's school and hospital infrastructure went backwards.
"The failure of the Government to increase the quality of life for the State's indigenous people while Dr Refshauge was Minister is a tragedy.
"When the dust settles, The Greens wish Dr Refshauge well in his retirement from politics" Ms Rhiannon said.
