Cuts to weekend rail services deliberate

Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said today that the announcement that some weekend train services would be scrapped was yet another example of the deliberate rundown of rail services by the State Government.

"This isn't about driver shortages at all.  It's about a State Government hell-bent on cutting public transport expenditure and determined to send out the message 'don't rely on us - drive your car'," said Ms Rhiannon.

"The community has to be told the truth.  

"Mr Costa's scrapping of almost one-third of weekend services is a permanent move and has been part of his Government's agenda of taking an axe to public services for some time.

"This Government has known for years about the over reliance on drivers working overtime just to meet normal demand, yet has failed dismally to increase the total amount of drivers.

"This is gross mismanagement of a basic public service and the Minister must be held to account.  

It's time the Premier found a Transport Minister who can do the job.  The current Minister, Michael Costa should be stood down," said Ms Rhiannon.
