O'Kane affair deals fresh blow to Howard's Iraq 'adventure'

Media Release: Thursday 27 May 04

Revelations that the Government was told about abuse by US soldiers in
Iraqi prisons more than 6 months ago have again revealed the Howard
Government's readiness to ignore or conceal the truth about Iraq, says
Australian Greens lead Senate candidate for NSW, Dr John Kaye.

"Today's revelations further confirm that the Howard Government either has
a cynical disregard for the truth, or is burying its head in the sand.

"The Howard Government is prepared to countenance any omission, fabrication
or fantasy in order to shore up its unjustifiable and untenable occupation
of Iraq.

"What will it take to convince the Prime Minister that he was wrong to
follow the US into Iraq? The invasion has not uncovered weapons of mass
destruction. It has not curbed terrorism. It has not delivered democracy,
sovereignty or stability.

"Instead, Australia is deeply implicated in a sorry saga of torture, abuse,
death and mismanagement.

"The world is more unsafe today than before the Iraq War. Yet the Prime
Minister cannot admit he was wrong.

"We don't know whether the Howard Government refused to listen to
unpalatable truths like those delivered by Major George O'Kane, or whether
they have covered up what they knew.

"But Australians have had enough. We want the truth, not the distortions
and half-truths that the Government is using to defend the indefensible.

"The Greens demand that Howard withdraw the troops now, and end Australia's
participation in a brutal and immoral occupation," Dr Kaye said.
