Teacher's wage campaign - 
It's about the priorities of the ACT Labor Government


Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker has lent her support to the ACT AEU campaign for
wage parity with NSW.

"Across Australia we are seeing a slow but remorseless undermining of the
key values of social cohesion by the Federal Government" Ms Tucker said
today. 

"In this case we have a free, high quality, public education system which
serves and attracts all sectors of society, and the importance we place on
that is fundamental to our identity as an egalitarian society."

"In the face of the continuing Federal Government attack on this Australian
ethic, it is incumbent on States and Territories not only to challenge this
shift but also to compensate in any way possible for the damage being
inflicted. This means, quite specifically, valuing and supporting teachers
in the public system."

"In short, the Federal Government is undermining social cohesion and an
egalitarian Australia.   Given that, the ACT Labor Government has to provide
emphatic support for teachers in public education; for nurses in the public
health system, and for the community sector as a whole" Ms Tucker said.

The ACT Greens passed motion in support of the AEU campaign for salary
parity with NSW at a Special General Meeting on 10 May 2004.
