Kemp offers no cure for Kurnell's woes

Media Release: 18 May 04

Greens NSW Senate candidate Dr John Kaye today criticised Environment
Minister David Kemp's failure to protect the Kurnell peninsula from
development.

"Dr Kemp is playing election politics. A national heritage nomination will
do nothing to stop the desecration of the Kurnell peninsula.

"The voters have seen this all before. Every election brings another
meaningless stunt to pacify the community that is angry at the damage being
done to Kurnell.

"The Minister accepts that Kurnell has priceless natural and cultural
heritage values yet he allows the site to remain unprotected for 12 months
while his committee looks at the proposal.

"Meanwhile the giant Australand corporation has approval for a 20 hectare
industrial development and is on the verge of a getting the nod for a 300
home development.

"Sites of Aboriginal and European historical significance, unique wetlands
and sand dune ecosystems and the cultural and tourist values of the site
are about to get trashed. The green and golden bell frog could disappear
from this site.

"The Minister and the local member, Bruce Baird, are insulting the
intelligence of the voters. The local community wants action to save the
site, not another inquiry or more broken promises," Dr Kaye said.
