Greens say Latham budget direction better but tax cuts will stymie
social dividend
Forests, rivers plans wanted
Commitments to boosting Medicare, dental services, youth employment and
learning, and the environment give Labor a more community-orientated
budget direction than the government, Greens Senator Bob Brown said
tonight.
"The Latham option will do more to reduce the rate at which the gap is
growing between rich and poor, but it falls far short of the boost to
public education, health, housing and transport put forward by the
Greens tonight," Senator Brown said.
"Labor is shadowing the Liberals on tax cuts rather than putting $14
billion over four years into public services and national building.
"The headline commitment to protecting Australia's native forests and
the Murray-Darling Basin is welcome but we need to see the plan: action
must follow the words," Senator Brown said.
