LABOR TAX CUTS IGNORE THE PEOPLE'S WISHES

Opposition leader Mark Latham's announcement that a Labor government
would extend income tax cuts across the board has turned an important
policy issue into a bidding war for votes, Cunningham MP Michael Organ
said tonight.

"A Morgan Research poll just nine days ago showed that 88.4%of people
want the Budget surplus spent on health, education, aged care,
homelessness and poverty relief rather than tax cuts, but the ALP hasn't
listened", Mr. Organ said.

The Australian Council of Social Service has identified $4.7 billion
worth of urgent spending needed on health, education, housing and
childcare."

"The costs of medical and hospital services jumped almost 9% in the last
year, secondary education was up almost 7% and tertiary education rose
by 8% and they're some of the real infrastructure challenges which the
Opposition should be thinking about applying budget surpluses to."

"Improved services are what the people have said they want, not tax
cuts. Labor is as out of touch with the wishes of the community as the
government", Mr. Organ said.
