There is no "near" Greens' decision on preferences, says Brown

The Greens have not neared making a deal to swap preferences with Labor
or the Coalition in the forthcoming federal election, Greens Senator Bob
Brown said today. *

"I have never discussed preferences with Opposition leader Mark Latham,"
Senator Brown said.

"However, during our joint press conference in Tasmania in March, I made
it clear that our bottom line on forests is protection of the 240,000 ha
of high conservation value forests, including the Styx River Valley of
the Giants, the Blue Tier and the Tarkine rainforests.

"A much better commitment to public health and education will be major
items we will use to judge the merits of both the Coalition and Labor in
the run to the election," he said.

"In Tasmania, the epicentre of forest destruction, a decision not to
direct preferences to either party in the House of Representatives has
already been made by the Greens," Senator Brown said.
