Debate with Nile would be welcome addition to election campaign

Media Release: 11 May 04

Greens NSW lead Senate candidate Dr John Kaye today challenged Fred Nile to
a public debate following his announcement that he would stand in the
Senate to neutralise The Greens.

Dr Kaye said: "I invite Rev. Nile to publicly debate the policy issues
that divide us. I would be prepared to meet him anywhere, anytime, and on
any topic of his choosing. We could even do it on a Christian radio station
if that would make him feel more comfortable.

"The Greens challenge Fred Nile to make this an honest contest. The voters
should have the opportunity to compare the policies of the Greens and the
Christian Democrats and decide which represents the sort of society they
want to live in.

"Rev. Nile's track record suggests that the issues that separate us are
more than just his persistent attacks on the human rights of gays,
lesbians, the elderly and women.

"Rev. Nile voted with the NSW government to weaken compensation given to
injured workers. He supports even greater payments to wealthy private
schools and he has suggested that Muslim women should be banned from
wearing their traditional dress in public places.

"There is clearly plenty of substance for an interesting debate between
Fred Nile and the Greens.

"We have issued the invitation. The ball is now in Fred Nile's court," Dr
Kaye said.
