Howard should reveal torture knowledge

Greens move for Senate inquiry

The Greens have called on the Howard government to reveal the timing and
extent of its knowledge of the humiliation and torture of Iraqi
prisoners.

In Canberra today, Greens Senator Bob Brown said the Prime Minister
should tell the nation:

	*	When the government or its agencies first received
information about the abuse;
	*	When and how this first came to the notice of the Prime
Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, or other members of the
government;
	*	What action has been taken to assure there has been and
will be no Australian involvement, or Australian acquiescence;
	*	How and when the Prime Minister has conveyed Australia's
rebuke to Washington and London;
	*	What the government knows about abuse in prisons in
Afghanistan, including at Baghran airforce base;
	*	What disapprovals Australia conveyed to the White House
about hooded and manacled prisoners, including Australians, at
Guantanamo base and what other information the government has about
mistreatment there. 

Senator Brown said the Greens will move tomorrow for a Senate inquiry.
