GREENS TO MOVE FOR ONE MPS' SUPER SCHEME

The Greens will be moving to amend the government's Parliamentary
Superannuation Bill when it comes before parliament next week to provide
one scheme for all members and Senators regardless of when they were
elected, Greens Cunningham MP Michael Organ said today.

"Having two different remuneration systems running at the same time is
ludicrous", Mr. Organ said.

"The government's proposal to introduce a community-standard 9%
superannuation system for politicians is admirable, but why should
members and Senators who are voted back at the next election still have
access to the current ridiculously generous scheme?"

"It creates two classes of elected representative on two different pay
scales and that is unfair and a recipe for chaos. It would mean some
representatives are more equal than others."

"Bringing on debate about changing Federal politicians' superannuation
arrangements in budget week is a good way to make sure that the public's
mind is elsewhere, and typical of the Howard government's abuse of the
parliamentary process", Mr. Organ said.
