MEDIA RELEASE

PM should push for tribunal on Iraq prisoner abuse
The Greens have called on Prime Minister Howard to make a considered
statement on the abuse of prisoners in Iraq. The abuses have been
condemned around the world.
Greens Senator Bob Brown said in Melbourne today: "Mr Howard made
Australia part of the Coalition of the Willing. The abuse crisis
increases the danger to Australia's defence force personnel in Iraq and
to Australians overseas in general. It requires an immediate domestic
and international response."
Mr Howard should make a strong statement to the nation outlining
Australia's abhorrence at the abuse.
"Mr Howard should state his willingness to support the establishment of
an independent investigation of the treatment of prisoners in Iraq and
Afghanistan," Senator Brown said.
"He should call President Bush with this offer, while making Australia's
condemnation of the events very clear," Senator Brown said.
