Greens vow to oppose new housing regulations

The NSW Greens have vowed to oppose any legislation or regulations that allow the government greater powers to evict public housing tenants, Greens MP and Housing spokesperson, Sylvia Hale said today.

"By proposing to relocate problem public tenants to the private sector, the Government is attempting to evade its responsibilities to disadvantaged families," Ms Hale said.

"It is ludicrous of Minister Scully to suggest that problem public housing tenants will find accommodation in the private sector. What he will be doing is forcing them onto the streets.

"To penalise an entire family for the misbehaviour of one person and to force them onto the streets is cruel and unfair.

"Problem tenants need specialist care, not to be made homeless. Being evicted will exacerbate antisocial behaviour. The entire community will suffer.

"Penalising parents for their children's behaviour will only inflame family tensions, lead to family break up and increase the burden on DoCs.

"The Greens will oppose these unfair vindictive regulations," Ms Hale said.
