Australia at risk of being drawn further
into US mess in Iraq

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today warned that John Howard's decision to
deploy more troops to Iraq exposes Australia to the risk of being drawn
further in to a mess in Iraq as other US allies depart.

"At a time when most Australians are calling for troops to be withdrawn
and doubt that the war was worth it John Howard is sending more
soldiers. Australians are entitled to ask why," Senator Nettle said.

Another 40 army trainers, 13 security soldiers and two armoured vehicles
have left Darwin this week.

"The public is right to query Australia's continued involvement in the
occupation of Iraq.

"The Greens are concerned that the Howard government is more interested
in appeasing the interests in Washington than respecting the wishes of
the Iraqi people or Australian people.

"These military personal are not going at the request of the Iraqis, but
in the interests of the US military.

"The Iraqi people are more than capable of training their own military.
The strategic purpose of the training supplied by the US and Australia
is to allow US military control over Iraq even after US troops are
withdrawn from the front line.

"John Howard should consider the interests of the Iraqis not the US
administration and withdraw Australian troops as a genuine step in
support of Iraqi self rule."
