MEDIA RELEASE
3 May 2004
On-time trains before air-con carriages
Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said today the most recent problems with CityRail's infrastructure were symptomatic of a Government whose skewed spending priorities were hurting commuters on a daily basis.
"The Government's recent mini-budget announcement outlined the expenditure of $1.5 billion to install air-conditioning on 498 train carriages - an absurd priority given the current mess the rail system is in," said Ms Rhiannon.
"Air-conditioned carriages won't entice a single person onto a train if there's a strong possibility that the train they need to catch is going to be late.
"Public transport in NSW has become an absolute joke.
"Someone has to be held accountable when late trains have become the norm and of course, that someone should be the Minister for Transport.
"If public transport was as important to Mr Costa as his wardrobe seems to be, the people of NSW would be seeing radical improvements across the rail system. Instead we're seeing a system that is struggling to meet basic demands.
"The Greens believe it's time for the Carr Government to commit to the long-term future of public transport in NSW and if this means going into debt, then it should do it," said Ms Rhiannon.
