Flint conflicts support need for independent appointment

'Flint should be sacked' - Brown

The Howard Government must cease making political appointments to major
public bodies such as the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA),
Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"The controversy surrounding ABA chairman David Flint's support for
broadcaster Alan Jones and the authority's 'cash-for-comments'
investigation is the latest example of why politicisation of key public
appointments is bad for Australia," Senator Brown said.

"Prime Minister John Howard has politicised appointments to major public
bodies such as the ABA and the ABC, undermining public confidence in
theses bodies and risking their ability to function in the best
interests of the community.

"The Flint case should be the last. Professor Flint should be sacked.
The government and the opposition must end the process of political
appointments and adopt the UK system, through a Commissioner for Public
Appointments, to foster transparency, accountability and public
confidence.

"The Prime Minister can start by adopting this system for Professor
Flint's replacement."
