A bigger better Assembly 

Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker, a member of the Standing Committee on Legal
Affairs, argued that the report of the inquiry into the size of the
Legislative Assembly tabled today has recommended a fair increase in the
number of members, and equity in representation.

"A minimum increase to 21 members, with electorates of an equal size, would
ensure that every voter has an equal influence. Seven member seats allow for
the diverse political interests of Canberra people to be reflected in the
make up of the Assembly."

 "There is even scope to increase the numbers to 23, based on population
projections for the next few years; which - to ensure the preference of
voters is reflected in the result - should be two electorates of seven
members and one of nine." Ms Tucker said today.

Fireworks - controlled not banned

Speaking as member of the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs, which tabled
a report on the Dangerous Goods Act, with particular reference to Fireworks,
Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker said today

"The committee has recommended that public access to fireworks over the June
long week-end be restricted to pre-arranged community events."

"We also recommend a complete re-write of the legislation that governs the
scale of fireworks, with particular reference to on-the-spot fines and a
national approach."

"I am well aware of the concerns of pet lovers that the indiscriminate use
of fireworks. In that context, comments from the RSPCA that the control of
fireworks, in the first instance, is a key factor; have been particularly
helpful" Ms Tucker said.
