Game bill back-down not good enough, say Greens

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said today that the Government's expected last-minute back-downs on the Game Bill were not good enough and that the Greens would vote against it when it comes to a final vote, which is expected late tonight.

Ms Rhiannon said, "The Game bill is an international embarrassment.

"Britain is abolishing hound hunts at the same time as NSW is bringing them in, along with cross-bows, clubs and other barbaric medieval hunting techniques.

"Minister Richard Amery will lose face when his Government amends its own bill to try to placate animal welfare and environmental critics of the new game hunting regime.

"We believe Bob Carr's key concessions will be to maintain his much touted ban on duck hunting and to put an animal welfare organisation on the regulatory body, the Game Council.

"The Greens will vote against this bill because it is pro-hunting.

"The Game Bill is only one of the fifteen bills the Government is rushing through the Upper House in the last days of the current session before it takes the indulgent eight week winter recess.

"Debating complex laws until early in the morning just so MPs can then take a long break is the wrong way to have an informed and intelligent debate" said Ms Rhiannon.
