Subject: GREENS AND LABOR CLOSE TO NUKE FUSION
The Greens (WA) today congratulated the Labor Government for proposing
to prohibit mining of uranium for nuclear purposes on any new mining
leases.
But the Greens say that Labor has not gone far enough.
Long-term anti-nuclear activist Giz Watson MLC said the announcement by
State Development Minister Clive Brown during the State Labor
Conference on the weekend showed that Labor and the Greens were close
to agreement on the issue.
This announcement brings the prospect of a nuke-free WA one step
closer, Ms Watson said.
It has taken some time for the Minister to indicate whether he was
going to fulfil Labors pre-election commitment, Ms Watson said.
We now see no barrier to the Government supporting our Nuclear
Activities (Prohibition) Bill, which has been awaiting debate the
Legislative Council for five years.
