CANBERRA WELCOMES REFUGEES

Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker will be the MC for the "Canberra Welcomes Refugees"
rally on Sunday June 23, beginning in Garema Place at 12 noon. And
concluding on the edge of Lake Burly Griffin in front of the National
Library.

"Australia is in danger of losing its humanity and compassion.  It is easy
enough to care for our families and friends. The real test of our fibre as a
nation lies in how we care for strangers who need our help" Ms Tucker said
today.

"John Howard and Co. pretend we have no responsibility for others in this
world. There are many many people in Australia, however, who believe they
are wrong."

"I am looking forward to the rally in Garema Place, and the event on the
edge of Lake Burly Griffin. It will be a real demonstration.  A
demonstration of our belief in a more generous and humane society. A
demonstration of our understanding of the need to find global solutions to
the problems of violence and inequity. A demonstration of the realisation
that the human rights of a person in Australia are not more important than
the human rights of a person outside it" Ms Tucker said.
