Earthquake report hits troubled nuclear project
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon today called for the second nuclear reactor planned for Sydney to be scrapped in light of the announcement that an earthquake fault line runs through the site.
Ms Rhiannon said "The federal and state governments have a duty of care to the people of Sydney to ensure that under no circumstances are they exposed to the threat of a nuclear accident.
"Earthquakes are a reality in this country. Clearly the risk is too great. There is now only one responsible course of action and that is for the nuclear reactor project to be immediately cancelled.
"The federal government also should be fast-tracking the dismantling of the current reactor. The revelation of the earthquake fault line must force the hand of the Howard government to put people's safety first.
"The NSW government also needs to act. I am seeking urgent talks with the NSW Premier to impress on him that he should add his voice to the growing calls to scrap the new nuclear reactor plans.
