Foreshore falls short

Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker has criticised Planning Minister Simon Corbell for
"calling in" the first stage of the Kingston Foreshore development. "I don't
know what the rush is with this project. It appears to be a fairly ordinary
housing development which falls short of the ecological and social ambition
that we thought were its goals" Ms Tucker said today.

In 2001 Kerrie Tucker put forward a Private Members Bill to make the
Minister's exercise of the call-in power disallowable by the Assembly. Both
the Liberal and Labor Parties opposed this. Mr Corbell in his speech in
August 2001 said that the Liberals abused the call-in power and that "The
use of the call-in power should be made in exceptional circumstances. The
Labor Party believes that it needs to be used for projects of significance,
and it needs to be used in circumstances outside of the ordinary."

"Is this another case of the Labor Party changing its views in its move from
opposition to government? Sadly this Kingston Foreshore project is not
really outside the ordinary at all." Ms Tucker said.

"The Minister said that he needed to prevent the three objections from
slowing down the proposal, but went on to say that they related to
previously approved infrastructure works. If the objections were irrelevant
then why did he need to intervene?"

"This decision throws up another inconsistency. Mr Corbell has been the
champion of an independent planning authority, yet he still wants to
exercise control over development approvals. He can't have it both ways."
