Parliament to debate women in politics

The NSW Parliament will debate the public importance of women in politics tomorrow, following a motion put by Greens MP Lee Rhiannon in the Upper House today.

Ms Rhiannon said, "The Greens note how hard it is for the major parties to live up to community expectations and give women an equal go.

"It seems that the culture of the major parties does not appeal to women.

"More than half the Greens candidates in the last Federal election were women, and men are outnumbered in our Parliamentary group by seven to four.

"The Greens are optimistic that things will change for the better in politics when women are equally represented.

"Our motion for debate tomorrow notes with profound regret that Aboriginal and Torres Strait women were excluded from voting until 1962 and that there is only one elected to an Australian Parliament currently," said Ms Rhiannon.
