Greens Oppose Federal Budget Items

Brown Welcomes Talk with Labor

The Australian Greens meeting in Melbourne this weekend have unanimously
voted to oppose measures proposed in this year's federal Budget, Greens
Senator Bob Brown said today.

"The Greens will target cuts to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and
disability pensions and also Mr Costellos's planned superannuation tax
cuts," Senator Brown said.

The Greens National Council passed the following resolution.

The Australian Greens deplore the Howard/Costello 2002/3 Budget, in
particular its proposed cuts to the PBS, new barriers to access to
disability pensions, and superannuation tax cuts to high income earners.

The Greens reject attempts by the Howard Government to pressure the Senate
into passing such proposals via threatening cuts to Government services.

"The Government should not be forcing disabled people to seek jobs which,
due to its own polices, don't exist.

"We welcome Mr Rudd's move for the ALP to talk with the Greens about how to
block the worst aspects of the budget," Senator Brown.
