SHOCKED: GREENS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE KIDNAPPED

Columbian presidential candidate and leader of the Greens Party, Ingrid
Betancourt, was kidnapped yesterday, sending shockwaves around the world
Greens political network.

Ms Betancourt received a standing ovation at last April's Global Greens
Conference in Canberra for a speech about her nation's injustices and the
danger she faced in standing for president.  Subject to numerous death
threats, she had been forced to send her children overseas.

Greens Senator Bob Brown says he is shocked by the news of the abduction.

"Ingrid Betancourt is one of the most inspiring human being I have ever met.
Her abduction will rouse worldwide condemnation.  I have asked the
Australian Government and US and Colombian embassies to do everything
possible toward securing her release."
