Jabiluka Joy and Anger
Hill Wrongfooted
The Jabiluka mine reversal has been welcomed by Greens Senator Bob Brown who
says it vindicates the struggle of the Mirrar people and their millions of
supporters around the nation.
"But Environment Minister Robert Hill is now seen as having totally
misjudged the issue. His role has been one of trampling over Aboriginal
rights, abetting environmental ruination and using millions of dollars of
taxpayers' money to nobble the international environmental arbitration to
foster the mine", Senator Brown said.
"While most Australians will celebrate Rio Tinto's decision not to support
the mine as another win for the environment against the odds, many will also
be angry at Hill's negative performance throughout the Jabiluka saga".
"It is obvious that Rio Tinto is reading Australian community concerns more
clearly than the Howard government".
"Rio Tinto now needs to go a step further and drop the mine altogether and
not sell it to another uranium producer", Senator Brown said.
March 23 is three years to the day since the Jabiluka blockade began in
1998.
