Lee Rhiannon MLC (NSW) The Greens
Media Release 20/12/00

Green Ban Brings Christmas Cheer on Light Rail

The Greens will intensify their efforts to preserve Randwick's Light Rail Corridor following a building union ban which has given new hope for the corridor.
The Building Trades Group of unions (BTG) has announced an interim Green Ban on all development other than Light Rail on Prince and Cowper Streets, Randwick.
The move follows an unsuccessful move by Greens member of the UNSW Council, NSW Upper House MP Lee Rhiannon, to stop the university selling a crucial piece of corridor land to a developer.
The BTG has called on UNSW Council to discuss the issue with local residents, and has urged Randwick Council to respect the interim ban in considering any development application.
Ms Rhiannon says the ban "is about the best Christmas present Sydney could possibly have: a welcome breathing space for us all to consider how we can meet our city's need for clean mass transport.
"We congratulate the BTG unions for taking this courageous and socially responsible step."
With the earlier removal in the 1960s of Australia's first beach tram, the city-to-Coogee tram line, residents and public transport groups waged a long campaign to preserve the land on the corridor for possible redevelopment of Light Rail.
Says Lee Rhiannon, "It's essential to keep this corridor open. Its preservation will add impetus to the Bay Light Express project, developing Light Rail along both sides of Botany Bay.
"The Greens will now pursue this with renewed energy at three levels: state government, local government and the university. We strongly urge the government to initiate urgent negotiations with the residents, Randwick-Botany Council and the UNSW, towards a long-term solution to this matter."
