Lee Rhiannon MLC (NSW) The Greens
Media Release 16/12/00

Time for Wollongong City Council to back public consultation over Stocklands' development

The Greens have called the Wollongong City Council to salvage its reputation over the future of land between Sandon Point and Thirroul, and put the interests of local residents and the environment before that of developers.
"It is imperative that at the meeting on Monday Wollongong City councillors reverse the decision to delegate authority to the General Manager for the first stage of Stocklands' Bulli development," Greens MLC, Ms Lee Rhiannon, said after meeting with residents at Bulli.
"The whole development between Sandon Point and Thirroul needs to be put on hold. The Council rather than handing decision making over to one person, the General Manager, should be setting up a consultation process so the community have the opportunity to put forward suggestions for the future of this area.
"From the information provided to The Greens at last Friday's on site briefing it is clearly not appropriate to have the huge Stocklands housing development in this area.
The Greens Upper House member expressed appreciation to local Aborigines and members of the Thirroul Action Group and North Illawarra Residents Action Group who at short notice provided a briefing on the controversy surrounding the area between Thirroul and Sandon Point.
"The Greens now understand that there are many reasons why there needs to be community consultation before the Development Application is even considered. A 6,000-year-old Aboriginal burial site discovered eighteen months ago on this land is believed to be one of only three such sites in Australia.
"A number of threatened species and 27% of the remaining Illawarra wetlands are contained within the area earmarked for development. Also much of this land, that Council apparently thinks is OK for housing, was under water in the 1998 floods.
"The community have some exciting ideas about how to manage this area. The starting point is the suggestion endorsed by the 500 strong public meeting held on Sunday December 10 at Sandon Point. That meeting moved that the state and federal governments be requested to buy back as much of the land as required to ensure the Aboriginal and European heritage is not compromised and the environment safeguarded. The Greens will give full backing to these suggestions," Ms Lee Rhiannon added.
