Greens back Jewish and Arabic communities' call for end to violence



The Greens have backed Arabic and Jewish community leaders in their call for an end to ethnic and religious violence.
Jewish and Arabic Australians have recently received death threats, and there's also been damage and bomb threats directed against synagogues, mosques, and community centres. 
Says The Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon: "We'd encourage anyone subjected to an act of violence or threatened violence to report the matter immediately to the police and the Federal Department of Ethnic Affairs. 
"There are laws against not only violence but also threats and racial vilification.  
"The Greens utterly condemn violence, intimidation or vilification directed against any individual or community," says Ms Rhiannon.
"We also caution media outlets or anyone else not to identify or criticise any ethnic or religious group in connection with these incidents until a thorough investigation has taken place. Ill-informed speculation as to possible motives can only interfere with proper investigations and inflame social conflicts."
