GE bill 'weak and dangerous' - Brown
The GE bill which the government, backed by Labor, passed this morning is
weak and dangerous. Greens Senator Bob Brown said the bill failed to
* require insurance for all GE licencees (eg crop growers).
* protect Australia's organic farmlands and natural environment and
ensure the Organic Federation of Australia is consulted.
* give local government the power to declare GE free status or provide
a comprehensive 'opt out' clause for states.
* require licensing of "low risk dealings" in genetically modified
organisms.
* set up a compensation fund for people whose health, job or
livelihood is damaged by GE products.
"The bill falls far short of protecting the public interest." Senator Bob
Brown said
