ACT GREENS MLA KERRIE TUCKER

CHANGES TO PUBLIC HOUSING ENTITLEMENTS

Government to bulldoze changes through

The Government, with the support of the independents and Mr Kaine, is to
push ahead with changes to public housing arrangements from January next
year, in the face of recommendations of a Select Committee into Public
Housing.

Committee Chair Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker described the Government's
insistence on proceeding with changes to public housing as ideologically
driven.

"The Committee asked the Government to explore the impact of its changes on
poor and vulnerable people, and bring an analysis back to the Assembly for
full debate before proceeding" Ms Tucker said today..

"Instead the Government kept the Assembly waiting for nine months before it
responded, and tabled that report on virtually the last sitting day, making
further reasonable discussion almost impossible."

In a press release today, the Welfare Rights and Legal Centre expressed its
frustration with Government policy which it believes "will further entrench
poverty in the ACT".

"Safe, secure, adequate and affordable housing is essential in mitigating
poverty and building social cohesion " Ms Tucker said.

"The Government has refused to examine the impact of its proposals on the
people it will affect, before proceeding to implement its plans to
'rationalise' public housing."

"These reforms could have a significant and destructive impact on the lives
of vulnerable people in our society." Ms Tucker said.
