Uncaring Government Ignores Community Voice

Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker today rejected the Government's response to the
Select Committee on the Role of Public Housing. 

"The Government has once again shown that it lacks understanding and respect
for poor and disadvantaged people in our community" Ms Tucker said today. 

" Key recommendations of the Select Committee's report, developed in
extensive consultation with community groups, have been disregarded by the
Government, and it appears that it intends to implement its most contentious
changes regardless." 

"The Government proposed to restrict its involvement in public housing to
such an extent that public housing will not necessarily be available for
people who cannot afford to rent in the private sector.  Where does the
government propose that they go?"

"The key recommendation of the inquiry that I chaired was that the
Government not erode security of tenure for public housing tenants until it
had explored the impact of such changes on the people concerned."

"The Government has done none of the research, and so demonstrated that it
neither understands nor cares for the disadvantaged and poor in our society"
Ms Tucker said.
