Government Adopts Brown's Formula for Net Bets

The Government's bill for a moratorium on interactive gambling on the
internet is set to pass the Senate with Greens amendments to allow for
horserace and sport betting.

The bill was reintroduced after Senator Alston got Senator Brown's assurance
that if the Tasmanian, Victorian and WA TABs were given the same exclusion
privileges (ie for wagering on horses and sports) as other states he would
back the bill.

"This is a $2.3 billion industry world-wide in its infancy. We need
legislative action now. With all states treated equally, it should proceed
- I think most Australians want us to put on restrictions," Senator Brown
said.

However, passage of the bill is threatened by loss of support from Democrats
Senators Woodley and Allison if Senator Brown's amendment is defeated.
