Green light for Canberra’s light rail future

The ACT Greens have welcomed the signing of a landmark contract that will bring the first stage of light rail to Canberra.
“This is a great milestone for Canberra. Building light rail takes vision and courage but is a positive and necessary investment for Canberra’s future,” said Greens Member for Molonglo, Shane Rattenbury.

“Through this project we’re ensuring much needed investment in high quality public transport. It is also a significant decision in city planning - one that steers us towards the sustainable, liveable and resilient Canberra that will serve us and our grandchildren well.

“Canberra’s light rail will run on 100% renewable energy and plays an important part in our transition away from fossil fuels.

“Our economically stable city can afford this investment for the future, and it is one that will see billions of dollars of social, environmental and economic benefits realised in the coming decades.

“Through Canberra Metro, the ACT Government has partnered with an experienced and innovative consortium. I have high confidence that Canberrans will get a first class transport project from this partnership.

“Light rail presents so many opportunities for Canberra as it grows and develops into the future. The Greens see the Gungahlin to Civic light rail as merely the first stage in a city-wide light rail network,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
