End role of for-profit providers to stop Careers Australia style rip-offs
Responding to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission finding that Careers Australia had "engaged in unconscionable conduct" Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said:
"While ACCC has exposed Careers Australia's misuse of public money and is forcing the company to pay the money back to the Commonwealth, this action alone will not stop for-profit providers from exploiting vulnerable people.
"Careers Australia's business model is being adopted by more for-profit providers as under the current National Partnership Agreement they know they have a good chance of receiving public funding for minimal outlay which means little or no education provided to their students.
"Stopping the exploitation of students and the rip off of public money ear marked for vocational education and training should be a top priority for Labor, Liberal and Nationals if they are serious about ending Careers Australia type rip-offs.
"The Greens are calling for the National Partnership Agreement to be renegotiated and to include a commitment that no public funds will go to for-profit private providers and no private provider will be funded for any course that TAFE can provide.
Careers Australia has campuses in Sydney CBD and Parramatta.
