PREMIER MUST REJECT TOXIC URANIUM INDUSTRY FOR NSW
Commenting on Wednesday’s media report that New South Wales was being promoted to overseas investors for uranium exploration, Jamie Parker MP, Greens spokesperson on Uranium, said digging toxic material out of the ground is a flawed economic strategy and enormous environmental risk.
“It is shocking that the Coalition Government is selling NSW’s uranium and coal seam gas potential to international investors,” said Mr Parker.
“No one but Premier Baird and his mates in the Minerals Council would think uranium mining in NSW is a good idea.
“By overturning the long-standing ban on uranium exploration in 2012, the NSW government was clearly setting up for a future pitch for uranium mining.
“The government has been caught red-handed spruiking to the world a new toxic industry for our state.
“The Greens will not stand by and let this happen. We can assure the government that any attempts to start uranium exploration will be strongly challenged by an alliance of environment groups, unions, traditional owners and medical groups.
“The future is renewable energy, not uranium or dirty fossil fuels. NSW has the potential to be a global renewable powerhouse.
“Mr Baird should instruct his government departments to promote a clean, green, innovative and sustainable future for NSW,” said Mr Parker.
