Childcare delay to hit families hard

The Australian Greens have expressed regret at the government’s decision to delay implementing seriously overdue changes to the early education and care sector for another year.

“Early education and care clearly isn’t a priority for the Turnbull government,” the Greens’ early education and care spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“The Liberal Party promised, before the last election, to tackle the rising cost of childcare.

“The fact that families now face another two years of uncertainty and an underfunded childcare sector simply isn’t good enough.

“Families paying for childcare today may never see any of these hollow promises from the government delivered before their children move onto school.

“The government seems to be happy enough to shelve these reforms and then bank the savings, leaving Australian families in the lurch.

“All Australian families should have access to affordable, flexible, high quality care. The longer the government delays with these reforms, the longer families around the country will be left waiting.”
