*Grassroots solutions show compassion for asylum seekers is possible*
Marrickville Councillor and Greens candidate for Sydney, Sylvie Ellsmore,
today applauded the endorsement of her motion to establish a Community Pass
for asylum seekers and refugees by Marrickville Council.
In a majority vote last night the council approved the establishment of a
pass for use by asylum seekers and refugees in the Marrickville Council
area, which will give essential information about and access to a full
range of Council services free of charge.

“Local initiatives like the Asylum Seeker Community Pass demonstrate that
compassion is possible when responding to the needs of those seeking asylum
in our communities,” Councillor Ellsmore said.
“Extending Council services to people seeking asylum is a small but
important step in changing the way we think about how Australia reacts to
the arrival of asylum seekers. It demonstrates that we can compassionately
meet their needs at little cost - but with huge positive impact.
“This program is both concrete and symbolic. The more communities reach out
to embrace those seeking our help, the more we encourage others to show
similar care and compassion.
“Access to the services the Community Pass will provide is critical for
social connection, mental health and the wellbeing of people seeking
asylum.
“With the election looming, the Labor and Liberal Party leaderships
continue to cast a false shadow of fear and negativity over the issue of
how our nation responds to people seeking asylum. Local initiatives like
the Community Pass are an antidote to this poisonous, cynical politics that
continues to harm innocent adults and children.
“The Greens’ approach to the global challenge of forced migration is guided
by a principle of humanitarian response and compassion. Providing safe and
legal avenues for people seeking asylum will see an end to the need for
people smuggling and our cruel offshore detention regime,” she said.
*BACKGROUND:*
The project is a partnership with two of the main services providing
support to asylum seekers and refugees in Sydney and the Marrickville area
– the Asylum Seekers Centre and Settlement Services International. The
project drew on the experience of a similar project in Darebin, Victoria.
The Marrickville Council Community Pass builds on and extends existing
programs, and will allow refugees and asylum seekers access to a number of
local services, including:
- The Arrival Hub digital app: which provides up-to-date community
information, such as services, facilities and events relevant to asylum
seekers as well as practical information including maps and transport.
- Local health facilities including gyms and swimming pools.
- Connections to local businesses and organisations which can provide
support or volunteer positions.
- Courses and education, including driving lessons.
- A new part-time Council staff member to support the implementation of
the program.
