Greens announce candidate for Grey

The Australian Greens are delighted to announce that Dr Jillian Marsh has been pre-selected as the Greens' candidate for the electorate of Grey in the forthcoming Federal Election.

Jillian Marsh is an Adnyamathanha Traditional Owner who was raised in the coal-mining town of Leigh Creek in South Australia's Flinders Ranges.

She has been recognised internationally, as well as locally, for her work on environmental and social justice issues. Jillian has been particularly strong as an advocate for the Adnyamathanha people over issues including the future of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and the current proposal for a nuclear waste dump on her ancestral lands in the Flinders Ranges. Her awards include the prestigious Jill Hudson Award for Environmental Protection in 1998 and the Nuclear-Free Future Award in 2008. Her PhD was awarded in 2010 for Environmental Studies.

Jillian lives at Port Pirie (in the electorate of Grey) and she has first-hand knowledge and personal experience of the issues that concern many people in regional South Australia. These include regional employment, women's equality, Indigenous rights, best practice in community governance and working with youth.

Her vision for a nuclear free future includes promoting the solar thermal power plant at Port Augusta and other renewable energy projects that will create safe jobs and career pathways for South Australians.

Jillian said that a major plank of her election campaign will be to stop the proposed nuclear waste dump at Barndioota in the Flinders Ranges.

"I'm running in this election to bring the voices of Indigenous people and regional Australia into important debates about our future. Traditional Owners have a right to say no to nuclear waste being dumped on their land. All people in regional South Australia have the right to a clean and sustainable future for their children and grandchildren. The Greens are the only political party standing up for a nuclear-free future," said Jillian Marsh.

NOTE: The electorate of Grey covers much of regional SA including the Far North, Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas and the West Coast.
