Badgerys Creek Airport flight paths threat to Blue Mountains world heritage status

Reports that the World Heritage status of the Blue Mountains National Park could be lost if the current plans for Badgerys Creek Airport flight paths proceed provides further proof that this project should be scrapped, Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said. (SMH, http://tinyurl.com/pffslr2)

"The World Heritage listing and natural integrity of the Blue Mountains National Park should not be put at risk from noise pollution associated with Badgerys Creek Airport," Senator Rhiannon said.

"The fact that the Turnbull-Abbott government signed off on 24/7 flights over this region speaks volumes for their attitude to our natural environment and national park protection.

"The flight paths are revealed in the Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed airport.

"When the UNESCO raised concerns that the project could 'compromise the integrity of the area' the warning should have been heeded by the federal government.

"This project would also inflict noise pollution on locals. It is insulting to Western Sydney residents that there would be no curfew on this proposed airport while Sydney Airport has a curfew.

"The Greens are strongly urging that people put in a submission to the EIS for the airport by 18 December," said Senator Rhiannon.
