Cross-Party Support for #SaveRadAd Campaign as Greens’ Motion Passes Upper House
Members of Parliament have indicated their support for Radio Adelaide with the unanimous passage of a Greens’ motion acknowledging the station’s work over the past four decades.
Station staff and volunteers watched on from the gallery as members of Parliament spoke to the motion.
“In establishing Australia’s first community radio station 43 years ago, the University of Adelaide has acted as a springboard for journalists, media personalities and musicians alike,” Ms Franks said.
“#SaveRadAd is a grassroots campaign to save a South Australian icon.
“It was fantastic to hear members across parties acknowledging their support for this important storyteller and its important place in the South Australian media landscape.
“Radio Adelaide features stories about South Australians for South Australians, ensuring that a range of communities have their voices heard on the airwaves.
“It’s clear that the Parliament echoes the view of the community that the loss of Radio Adelaide would result in many stories being left untold.
“We know that the university is considering a number of options for its future following the sale of the station’s current premises on North Terrace and urge the university to ensure Radio Adelaide’s longevity, regardless of whether it continues to operate the station directly, or transitions it to a new entity,” Ms Franks concluded.
The #SaveRadAd campaign has garnered broad community support, with more than 5000 people signing the petition so far calling on the University of Adelaide to keep the station on the air.
